Having said that, there is also quite a lot to enjoy: the R-Rating allows for plenty of graphic gore (although, sadly, much of it is also digital) there are some delightfully absurd moments (Hellboy's encounter with hideous witch Baba Yaga, who lives in a house on giant chicken legs, is excellent, and Eastenders fans will enjoy seeing Mo Harris brandishing a machine gun) the links to Arthurian legend are fun, and apparently make the film more faithful to the comics than Del Toro's movies and director Neil Marshall occasionally shows us what he is really capable of (the single-shot fight scene in a Siberian complex at the end of the film is wonderful). Oh, and there's a REALLY bad ectoplasmic Ian McShane. So what did it do to deserve such damnation? For many, the simple fact that it wasn't directed by Guillermo Del Toro and didn't star Ron Perlman was enough to demonise the movie, but even overlooking the change of director and leading man, there is still plenty to dislike: the creature-filled action scenes are over-reliant on unrealistic CGI the comedy frequently mis-fires Daniel Dae Kim and Sasha Lane are lousy as Hellboy's sidekicks and the plot is rather scattershot. The majority of fans and critics gave this film hell on its release. Hellboy (David Harbour) is given the job of preventing this from happening. 1500 years later, changeling Gruagach (voiced by Stephen Graham) pieces the queen back together so that she can destroy mankind and rule the Earth with monsters as her loyal subjects. 517 A.D.: King Arthur defeats the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich) with the help of his trusty magical sword Excalibur, chopping her into pieces and burying her still-living body parts in the far reaches of the land. Viewers are human and all that, but there's always been kind of a potential uplifting part there in terms of flawed. TS: Part of Darkest Dungeon's DNA is the fallibility of humans. "We want to pack the game with new awful monsters." So this game is more about reaching towards something precious than it is sort of exploring how far down the staircase goes. It's trying to get somewhere, it's trying to accomplish something, and above all it's faint, and distant, and the journey to get to it is extremely tough, but it's there. And so it's going to be Darkest Dungeon, it's not going to be easy, it's not going to be forgiving, we're not going to hold your hand, all of those things remain true.īut it has an aspirational thread that the nihilistic older brother didn't have. I think if the first Darkest Dungeon is about going deeper and understanding how much worse things can get at each step, this game is about clawing up out of it. Is that where you're headed?ĬB: I think we have a rich tradition of table flipping. Often we see sequels deliberately kind of flip the table on players' expectations, on habits they've developed, and certainly Darkest Dungeon is not a game where players are often allowed to get comfortable. But that doesn't mean Ali didn't recognize how much people cared for him. Why we love it: For much of Ali's career, he filled the air with the idea that the people around him didn't make him - that he made himself. Why we love it: Although it's hard to think of many times when Ali was actually silent, a phrase like this has more impact coming from a guy who seemingly had a comeback for everything than it does from a person who is naturally quiet. But, like many of Ali's sayings, the idea he is expressing makes a lot of sense, even when dismissing what the rest of the world sees as a benchmark. People have different bodies, are at different levels of training, have different pain thresholds. Today, in memory of the man who not only was the greatest but who also made sure to tell you he was, we rank his greatest quips. His poignant sayings about sports and life figure to remain iconic for generations to come alongside the lore of his historic fights. Muhammad Ali was as skilled with words as he was in the ring.
